NVQs in Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG)
NVQ qualifications are available at levels 2, 3 and 4 for people working in an organisation which provides advice and guidance to clients in a wide range of activities in the public, private and voluntary sectors. Examples of the type of organisations are social services, colleges and universities, youth workers, housing and welfare services in the public sector, financial advisers, housing associations, training organisations, debt counsellors in the private sector and caring organisations, consumer advice bureaux, specialist welfare organisations in the voluntary sector.

Level 2 Course Description.
The level 2 NVQ in Advice and Guidance will provide practical training in good practice to staff and volunteers who make and maintain contact with clients, who identify their needs and provide routine advice and guidance including referral to other agencies. Typically these staff will be working in front of house services including reception, consumer advice, and advisers. The course will be delivered at the organisation minimising disruption by offering workshops, tutorials and on the job assessment. The level 2 has six units (3 mandatory, 3 optional which can be chosen to suit the work undertaken by the individual).
Up to 4 units from level 2 can be carried forward to level 3.
Level 3 Course Description.
The level 3 NVQ in Advice and Guidance is aimed at staff and volunteers who provide advice and guidance to a caseload of clients who require more complex and non routine services. This would include referral to other agencies. The training will provide practical techniques including all aspects of legal and ethical standards. It will develop skills on disseminating information, action planning, adapting and interpreting information and providing feedback.
All training and assessment can be completed at the workplace with case studies and observations done with clients. Level 3 has six units (3 mandatory and 3 optional which can be chosen to suit the work undertaken by the individual).
Up to 4 units from level 3 can be carried forward to level 4.
Level 4 Course Description.
The level 4 in Advice and Guidance is aimed at senior advisers and managers in organisations which provide a service to clients. Key areas include caseload management, supervision of advisers, training and development and networking. An extensive list of optional units provides opportunities to specialise in a range of particular aspects of the service.
The level 4 requires completion of 8 units, 4 mandatory and 4 optional.
Delivery Method.
All individuals will be provided with a thorough induction process at the start of the course which will fully explain the content, assessment methods and timescales. Candidates will have an opportunity to discuss the appropriate NVQ level and progression. The induction will be of approximately 2 hours. The course will be delivered in 3 – 6 months and will include workshops, tutorials and some supported self study normally done in the workplace. Assessment will be by observation, case studies and portfolio of supporting evidence.
